Candy’s Birthday

smallimg_1216

Despite the heavy workload on Saturday, I was going to make another  balloon dress on Sunday for Candy’s 21st Birthday party. She’s a friend of Glen’s and her sister had requested for us to make for her something special. I made the dress using the same base, while completely changing the outer flourish. The big blossom in the middle of the chest is an inspiration from a fashion magazine I read years back. I’m quite satisfied with the final product and proudly say that I now can handle the basics of balloon dress-making.

Children’s Event at Tampines West Community Club

smallimg_1195

Was at Tampines West CC on Saturday to help Glen with a children’s event. My role was simple – one balloon dress up for parade. It was quite similar to the previous design but I experimented with another colour scheme. Jocelyn and Jastina had been very helpful in the process of making the dress. Next time two of you should try it out yourselves.

Here are some photos.

Pumpkin Carriage Bike

Was getting really bored just now so I played around with 2 fuschia 160s. Wanted to make some cool shape out of nothing and it turned out to be the “pumpkin” shape on the top. So I might as well add 2 wheels at the bottom so that I can smoke my way out by calling it the Pumpkin Carriage Bike. For the modern era Cinderella, rides to all clubs, portable and lasts through midnight till day break.

PAYM President’s Challenge

small937

29th Aug was a big day for many of us. To me, it was my first time making a balloon dress, and as if to make it harder for me, I was to do it outdoors, right under the blazing sun. This event took quite a while of preparations and concluded in success after a series of drama.

Wednesday – Went to David’s place to finalise the design and to meet Givan, who would be wearing the dress I’m making.

Thursday – Borrowed David’s mannequin and had a bit of practise to make sure the proportions are right.

Friday – Suffered a bad fall from handball and my whole left wrist is swollen. Rushed to the Accidents and Emergency department in NUH and took an X-Ray. The doctor confirmed that the bones were ok and encouraged me to as much as possible move my wrist so that the swell clears faster.

Saturday – Woke up in the morning, none of my fingers could move at all. Swollen like crap and hurt like no other. I called Glen and said I won’t be making the dress but will be there to see. Then I caught a cab and got on my way to Takashimaya. On they way, I kept rubbing my hand and wrist. By the time I reached there, I could, with extreme pain, move the fingers on my left hand, but the movement was very limited. So I watered down some painkillers and started working on the dress. I had a lot of help from Jocelyn and Jessica for the entire process, Joanne also came in the later part and helped me out. Initially I couldn’t even get a balloon tied, soon the pain became numbness or should I say the painkiller was working and I could carry on without much difficulty. After 4 painful hours (literally), the dress is done and I think it looks great!

After making the dress, it is also necessary to make a wand or sceptor or something along that line (you know what I’m sayin) for the girl to hold. Otherwise it’d be very awkward because she won’t know where to put her hands. LOL.

Gabriel also made a balloon dress, which was worn by Irene. He’s the guy who got me started in balloon twisting.

It was a great day and although I was totally shagged out, I left the place with an immense sense of satisfaction and a beautiful page in my portfolio.

Jamming sessions at Balloon Baron

Went to David’s place on Friday night and met up with quite a number of friends. David showed up how to make an arc of heart shape and a simple balloon wall. After that, I made a fuwa 福娃欢欢 based on Niko Fric’s design. Took me an hour to finish, phew!

Love Story

This love story concept is something that I’ve always enjoyed making and am constantly coming up with better designs and different variations. This has trained up my skills to refine details, and it comes in handy when I want to add some “wow” factor to my sculptures, which David always stresses in all the balloon sculptures he makes.

For future explorations, I intend to create some sort of storyline using simple sculptures in the future.

Brick Heart

This rigid looking heart is my own design, based on the cube unit taught by David. I call it the brick heart, cos of the visual resemblence. Done by connecting 3 cubes together and adding a little curve at the top.

Pair of Teddy

I first saw this idea of stuffing two bears into a crystal clear heart at Balloon Baron’s. It was mounted on a bush of roses in the bouquet made by Gabriel. It has since been one of the designs most frequently presented by me.

If you wanna try stuffing something into a balloon like so, look out for the tutorial section which will be up pretty soon.

Flat Heart

This design is one of the first weaving patterns I’ve learned. Gabriel made one similar for me when I first began twisting. When I had gotten better, I tried to recreate something based on what I could recall. There’s a slightly difference between his and my version. Many thanks to Gabriel =)

This design is done by making the inner portion first. Start by twisting a tile of 4 round bubbles and securing the corners with pinch twists. Make 3 such tiles and then double-layer the entire cascade. Then wrap the outer colour over and go one round.

The instructions for making this can be found under the Tutorials tab.

Jie Ying’s request

On Monday, I made this sculpture in the morning for Jie Ying’s friend. I’t s simple design of 9 5-petaled flowers bundled up in a stalk, a design which I came up with last year. I added a 3-flap decoration at the bottom to give it a more graceful look.  (you know, it used to look somewhat like cabbage)

The feedback was great, what a pleasent start for the week!
