花好月圆 Lantern of Plum Blossoms
Posted by Twisted Balloons in Creations, Events on October 4th, 2008
Time was 14th September 2008. We were onboard persistence en route to Japan and it was mid autumn festival. There was a lantern making competition and I thought of making this lantern using balloons and putting lightsticks in the middle so it glows. Thankfully or unfortunately otherwise, the mess we stayed in was freaking cold, preserving the balloon sculpture well, almost as well as our semi-alive bodies. This is the first time I combined origami with balloon sculpting.
Sculpture is made of 12 5-petalled plum blossoms locked together in a sphere. Round satin white in the middle, break the cyalume stick and it’s done! Looked beautiful at night, I’m loving it and looking forward to mid-autumn 2009! This was my very first original design which I figured out based on the inspirations I got from making kusudamas. The adaptation of it to a lantern is something new, though.
